Decorative lights have always been a part of Christmas ornamentation. Miniature candles were the first lights to illuminate a Christmas tree. This is why vintage Christmas lights are mostly in the form of candles. The first electric Christmas lights took candle form. A form of vintage Christmas lights was the bubble lamps. The vial with the bubbling liquid serves as the candlestick, and the bulb is at the base of this. It is designed so that the heat generated by the bulb would set off the oil or methylene chloride in the vial to bubbling. The effect is a flame like flickering movement of bubbles on the Christmas tree. The lights and the bubbling liquid have different colors, making the display all the more attractive. They are usually arranged in a string of eight lights. These vintage Christmas lights were as popular then as the miniature fairy string lights are today. Some of these vintage Christmas lights are still around in period stores, but there are many newer and safer versions of the old design. For instance, the first bulbs were incandescent 15 watt bulbs, but were later changed to low-watt low-energy LED.

Some Christmas night lights do carry the ubiquitous candle designs up to now. These lights that are used for bedrooms and hallways during December come in the shape of candles and have bubbles, but then they are plug-into-the-wall kinds of lights. Some are already adorned with additional glitters. Others are imitation vintage Christmas lights that have color changing LED bulbs and permanent bubbles. Newer versions of these vintage Christmas lights used as night lamps still have the candle form, but the original plastic globe base that covers the bulb now has hundreds of different shapes. For with the new discoveries in plastics, molds can easily be produced. Therefore there are now bases of vintage Christmas lights that take the shape of a Christmas tree, a star, Santa Claus, cute little elves, a cool snowman, and other images relevant to the Christmas holidays. Another classic image that never goes out of style is the Christmas star that lights up the top of the tree. If it is not a star, it is an angel that is seen up there. These are both important symbolisms in a Christian Christmas, but are attractive as secular decorations as well. Night lights do also have stars and angels as designs. All of these would be great additions to a collection of vintage Christmas lights.

Vintage Christmas lights could be used as themed decorations around the house for that old Holiday feeling. They could be used as Christmas tree ornaments. They could light up a tabletop display. They could be put on windowsills with other Christmas displays. They could light up the night of children in the nurseries and bedrooms. Some can even be put out-of-doors for deck and yard displays. One thing to remember is that when using the original incandescent bulbs, safety measures should be observed. The old bulbs in vintage Christmas lights could get pretty hot. With all that said, have a happy holiday!
